Support Your Library

Don’t let our name fool you. The Middlesex County Public Library is not a county agency. While the County of Middlesex is as generous as it can be in providing us with as much funding as it is able, we are a non-profit institution that relies fundamentally on participation and the generosity of our patrons. There are a variety of ways to help the Library. Some of the most beneficial types of gifts are listed here as a guide. For details about any of the following please call the Library at 804-758-5910. Gifts for the Present

Have books that you would like to donate? Due to space constraints, we ask that you limit your donations to two boxes of books. You can drop off material any time the Library is open. The Library can provide a tax-deductible receipt for your donation. We may add your donation to the collection, offer them for sale, transfer to other institutions, or recycle them. All donated materials will be reviewed by staff for possible placement in the collection based on the guidelines established in the Library Collection Development Policy. The library reserves the right to accept, decline, or discard offered material.

For health reasons, we cannot accept books that you wouldn’t allow in your own living room. That means moldy or damaged books. We cannot accept old magazines, not even old National Geographic Magazines; nor do we have a use for encyclopedias or school textbooks.

We are most appreciative of the many donations of material we receive each year.

Many of our patrons give money to the Library in order to memorialize a friend or loved one who has passed on or to honor someone still living. Funds may be sent to the Library. Please indicate the designation in a note accompanying your check and we will provide you with a receipt and send a note to the family. As appropriate, special book plates will be placed in the books or inscriptions placed on or near furnishings purchased through your gift. You can help keep the memory of a friend or loved one alive by making a donation. Or let someone know how much you value them through a gift to the Library. A gift in honor of a teacher, special birthday, or any occasion or individual is a great present. A receipt is sent to you and a card is sent to the honoree to announce your gift.

You or your organization can become a Medici of Middlesex County by sponsoring programs at the Library. By paying for professional programs or underwriting events, such as author talks, you can make it possible for the Library to offer stimulating and educational programs that it could not otherwise afford. We cannot host programs that are primarily intended to sell products, although guest authors may sell their books after an event. Contact the Library to discuss opportunities.

Gifts for the Future

Designating the Middlesex Public Library as a beneficiary in your will ensures library service for future generations. Bequests and other forms of planned gifts have an enduring impact on Library programs and services and provide for long-term growth.

Please consider us when making your estate plans. There are many forms of planned gifts that are excellent vehicles for significant giving and can offer major estate tax benefits to donors.

Life insurance policies designating the Library as beneficiary may be a current or deferred gift. Gifts of securities offer special tax benefits.

Other Ways of Giving

The Friends of the Library provide valuable financial support, allowing the Library to increase the size and scope of its collection and improving the atmosphere of the Library by raising a significant amount of money.
