2025 Summer Reading Program Intern (part-time hourly)
Summary of job responsibilities
Assists the Youth Services Coordinator in administering the Summer Reading Program. Regularly interacts with children and young adults during Summer Reading events under the direction of the Youth Services Coordinator, which may include reference and reader’s advisory. Makes preparations for story times and performances, and assists in clean up afterwards, at the Urbanna Branch and Deltaville Branch, as well as offsite events. Assists in promoting and publicizing the Summer Reading Program in the community. Reports to the Youth Services Coordinator.
Typical Job duties
- Assists in preparation of story times and performances, including preparing crafts and staging performance area.
- Assists in cleaning up after story times and performances.
- Assists Youth Services Coordinator in administering summer reading contest, including checking and distributing summer reading logs, maintaining contest statistics, and distribution of prizes.
- Assists Youth Services Coordinator in instructing children and parents/guardians in the use of library services and resources.
- May learn some aspects of the library assistant duties, to include shelving materials, circulation functions, and basic reference services.
- Additional duties may be assigned by the Youth Services Coordinator.
Minimum qualifications
Education: Current college undergrad, graduating high school senior or high-performing high school junior. Must have interest in a career in education or children's librarianship.
Knowledge: Be comfortable working with computers, learning new online applications, some experience with Microsoft Office Suite or Google apps.
Physical: Requires sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching; talking and hearing clearly, including use of telephone; lifting and carrying 20 pounds or less; pushing and pulling book trucks on wheels that weigh 20-30 pounds; dexterity for word processing, writing, filing, shelving, and using scissors; vision to see all levels of shelving and to see while using computer.
Logistics: Must be able to travel to the Urbanna Branch and Deltaville Branch. Arrangements may be made to travel to the Middlesex YMCA, Horizons Daycare, and Deltaville Community Association.
Terms of employment
Dates of employment: June 16 - Aug. 1, 2025. Weekly schedule would be mostly Tuesday - Thursday. Hours are 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM.
Wages: $15.00/hour. Paycheck or direct deposit given at the end of each month. No benefits.
